2023 Take a Bite Out of Cancer Tournament FAQ

When?

  • CHECK IN @ Hooked On Tackle 9am-4pm, Friday July 7th, 2023. If you need late check in please message us on Facebook to make arrangements.
  • Lines in the water AFTER 5:59pm on Friday, July 7th, 2023.
  • TURN IN @ Hooked On Tackle by 2pm on Sunday, July 9th, 2023. You must be in line at Hooked on Tackle by 2pm – NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ALLOWED

Where Can I Fish?

  • Land based only: fishing rod and reel must remain on the land when fishing.
  • Fishing will only be allowed from the beach. No piers, jetties or bays.
  • Boundaries – Sabine Pass to Matagorda. No state or federal parks. i.e. Galveston State Park, Padre Island National Seashore is off limits.

What do I need to bring to check in?

  • Valid Picture ID
  • Current Saltwater fishing license (or proof of exemption)
  • If you catch anything over 48″ you will need a 120 inch soft-tape ruler with which to measure. We will have a very limited number for sale at check in.
  • ALL pictures must have our yardstick or they will be automatically disqualified.

Can I check in for my fellow angler?

  • Yes, but you will need to show us a copy of their valid Picture ID and current Saltwater fishing license (or proof of exemption).
  • Angler must have entered online (this verifies they have read and agreed to all rules).
Can my fellow angler help me?
  • Participants may ONLY get help landing and releasing their shark, angler must reel in his/her own shark.
  • Assisting taking the rod off the tower/deck/platform to ground is allowed without cranking the reel.
  • Spotting is allowed (shouldering a pole or holding the back of a fighting belt), but only the participant claiming the fish may crank on the reel. This is for the safety of the angler as well as the fish.
  • Only anglers registered in the shark division are allowed to deploy their own bait or other anglers in the shark division’s baits.
  • Jet skis, zodiacs and drones will be allowed.
  • Some extra assistance in the kids division may be allowed.

I want to enter the raffles, but not the tournament, can I do that?

I entered, but something suddenly came up and I can’t go anymore, can I get a refund?

No refunds, even if you got yourself disqualified. And we’re a non-profit; we’re all in this to make a difference for someone that needs it. Don’t be that guy, ya’ll.

  • All participants must provide a yard stick to put the Take a Bite Out of Cancer sticker on. **Updated 6/25/23: We have found a printer and will be able to provide yard sticks to participants.**
  • All participants measuring catches over 48 inches must provide a 120 inch soft-tape ruler with which to measure.

PHOTO RULES

You the angler must prove to Take a Bite Out of Cancer the measurement of your catch via required digital photographs as defined within these rules and examples given on the example page. Please read and understand these rules & requirements, failure to have pictures verifying the submitted length of your catch can result in disqualification.

SHARK SUBMISSIONS REQUIRE THREE PICTURES PER SHARK

  1.  SHARK PHOTO: (Angler Photo) Angler posing with entire shark visible, lying straight, Take a Bite Out of Cancer ruler held correctly, and taken from correct angle. Further details below. Our ruler must be used.
  2. SHARK PHOTO: (Total Length Photo) Using the 120 inch ruler, a photo containing the tip of the tail & a legible and verifiable total length measurement. Further details below.
  3. SHARK PHOTO: (Fork Length Photo) Using the 120 inch ruler, a photo containing the fork of the tail & a legible and verifiable fork length measurement. Further details below.
NON-SHARK SUBMISSIONS REQURE TWO PICTURES PER CATCH
  1.  NON-SHARK PHOTO: (Angler Photo) Angler posing with entire catch visible, lying straight, Take a Bite Out of Cancer ruler held correctly, and taken from the correct angle. Further details below. Our ruler must be used.
  2. NON-SHARK PHOTO: (Measurement Photo) Photo containing a legible and verifiable total length measurement of your catch with the correct ruler visible and not covered up. Further details below.
TIPS FOR PHOTOS
  1.  Take multiples of each required photo and review them to ensure that an adequate picture has been taken.
  2. Discuss the process with the person taking photos in advance so they understand the procedures.
DETAILED DEFINITIONS OF ANGLER PHOTOS
  1.  SHARK PHOTO: (Angler Photo)
    1.  One photo required showing the angler posing with the shark, looking at the camera.
    2. The Take a Bite Out of Cancer ruler must be held straight, visible and legible within the photo.
    3. The Take a Bite Out of Cancer ruler must be held straight along the length of the shark, in front of and near or touching the dorsal fin, shark tag visible if applicable.
    4. The entire shark must be straight, visible and clean within the photo.
    5. Do not hold tail, take photo perpendicular to the length of the shark.
    6. Fork length reported by the angler must be verifiable in PHOTO #1 for it to qualify.
    7. Fork lengths are verified via software using the Take a Bite Out of Cancer ruler to scale the photographer and verify measurement.
  2.  SHARK PHOTO (Total Length Photo)
    1.  One photo required showing the tip of the tail & the 120″ ruler visible and legible.
    2. The fork length represented within this photo must match the length reported by the angler on the catch-log & must be visible & verifiable in SHARK PHOTO 2 for it to quality.
    3. Sharks are measured in a straight line with tape measure held tight above the shark.
    4. Do not follow curvature of the shark with the tape measure.
  3.  SHARK PHOTO (Fork Length Photo)
    1.  One photo required showing the fork length & the 120″ ruler visible and legible.
    2. The fork length represented within this photo must match the length reported by the angler on the catch-log & must be visible & verifiable in SHARK PHOTO 3 for it to qualify.
    3. Fork lengths are verified via software using the Take a Bite Out of Cancer ruler to scale the photograph and verify the measurement.
  1.  NON-SHARK PHOTO (Angler Photo)
    1.  One photo required showing the angler posing with the catch, looking at the camera.
    2. The entire catch must be straight, visible and clean within the photo.
    3. The Take a Bite Out of Cancer ruler must be straight, visible and legible within the photo.
    4. Take photo perpendicular to the length of the catch.
  2.  NON-SHARK PHOTO (Measurement Photo)
    1.  One photo required.
    2. If catch is less than 48″, Take a Bite Out of Cancer ruler is to be used.
    3. If catch is longer than 48″, then 120″ ruler must be used.
    4. The catch must be straight, visible & clean.
    5. The ruler used must be straight, visible & legible.
    6. The total length of the catch represented within this photo must match the length on the catch-log.
    7. Fish lengths are measured in a straight line, from tip of closed jaw or tip of nose (whichever is longer and applies to species of fish), to tip of tail.
    8. DO NOT extend lower jaw and take measurements from there.
 
  1.  STINGRAY PHOTO (Angler Photo)
    1.  One photo required showing the angler in a safe position away from the tail of ray.
    2. The entire Take a Bite Out of Cancer ruler must be straight, visible and legible within the photo.
    3. The Take a Bite Out of Cancer ruler must be held over the width of the ray to represent the measurement from wingtip to wingtip.
  2.  STINGRAY PHOTO (Measurement Photo)
    1.  One photo required.
    2. If catch is less than 48″, Take a Bite Out of Cancer ruler is to be used.
    3. If catch is longer than 48″, then 120″ ruler must be used.
    4. Always keep tail away angler.
    5. The ray’s outline must be visible.
    6. The ruler must be straight, visible and legible.
    7. The total length from wingtip to wingtip represented within this photo must match the length on the tach-log.
